This weekend Paris was blessed with the most gorgeous sunshine I have seen in quite some time. The air was still chilled but the sun has a way of bringing out the best of moods in this California girl. The boyf and I headed out to Le Marais to check out an antique market and got pleasantly lost amidst the twisted alley-ways that make up the neighborhood. Among the throngs of vintage Hermes scarves, designer jewelry and glamour-centric fur coats (of course, photos weren't allowed!) I did find a few fun random things...I am obsessed with shades of blue and orange right now and thought these old tins were just fab. And how could the inner Media Studies student in me not love the Sigmund Freud comic book?!

I am a seriously sentimental kind of girl. Moving out of an apartment, taking old clothes to the thrift shop, flipping through childhood photos - it can all bring on the tears! The end of the year is no different. Each New Year I am faced with the fact that another year has passed and I get a bit weepy-eyed about the good times that have occurred. But since there's not a thing one can do, eventually we embrace the changing times. Tommy Ton took a look through the stylistic wonders of 2010 and came up with a list that no one could argue with. Above are my favorites...Mirsolava is always a favorite of mine, Shala already dropped my jaw with this photo earlier this year and ADR is unstoppable.

Zara is giving Starbucks a run for their money on who really owns the streets of Paris. Always a die-hard fan of Zara's fast-fashion, even I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the reality that I enter a Zara store multiple times a week. The store is completely unavoidable. There is one in the path of my route to work, school, coffee, wherever, everyday. Yet, I'm just not sick of it. Oh no. I have picked up quite a few items I've been wanting to share with you, but as I'm sure you're sick of hearing, the cold has practically got me running for cover! There are so many pieces this season that just say, "Wear me!" Like that little red number...ooh how many times I've thought of you!

For the past few weeks I have been scouting out items for to decorate our new little apartment without much luck. I know that all good things take time, but man, I just want it finished already! (I'm not one for patience, hehe). Especially when I see perfectly put homes like the one designed for the Elle Decor Showroom in San Francisco. Located in the uppity St. Francis Wood neighborhood, the 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom home was completely remodeled and vamped up by numerous famed Bay Area designers. Though the $30 entrance fee seems a bit steep just to tour a home, I would probably do it if I were in the Bay. I need the inspiration! Decorating a tiny apartment is much harder than I thought it would be, I was certain I would find things that would be "perfect" with ease. What. Was. I. Thinking?

But as I've quickly learned, it isn't quite the spectacle in France that it is in the States. Marché aux Puces - St. Ouen

I spent Saturday wandering around the famous Marché aux Puces in St. Ouen. The flea market is comprised of a handful of individual markets catering to different antique and used goods that intertwine with one another through gorgeous narrow pathways. In one part of the market you may find hand embroidered silk couches from the 1800's and down the next pathway you'll be listening to Bob Marley as the vendors are hustling you their latest Jamaican fare.

I, naturally, was drawn into the museum-like clothing stalls boasting vintage designer goods from Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Chanel and the like. It was...amazing. A true treasure trove. Most booths prohibited photo-snapping so you'll just have to take my word on it, I suppose. Above are a few photos I was able to snap on the sly from some of my favorite stands.

Adventures in (Studio) Decor

Thanks to the strikers, my much anticipated trip to IKEA was ruined. Though hardly original and definitely cheap quality, the "one-stop-shop" concept has become increasingly appealing as my days on the Metro continue. So now, I must make an adventure out of decorating my teensy studio apartment. I am doing my best to see the fun and thrill of such an adventure (and am trying very hard to delete the image of me with loads of stuff shoving myself onto a packed afternoon train). The first stop was the aforementioned flea market. Though there were some items of note, I didn't find anything that caught my eye. Next came Zara Home. I've got to say, I do love me some Zara. I have yet to find anything that has called, "please let me become part of your Parisian life" yet but am determined to succeed on this venture!

Though I came to Paris armed with three pieces of luggage, the shopping bug here is basically irresistable. I am in need of replacing some basic items, including a new coat. I love cut out style of these coats, they add something new to a traditional winter peacoat.

I have already had some interesting shopping adventures (including my first flea market trip) I would've loved to share, but I am camera-less until the boyfriend arrives with it in tow tomorrow.

When I left California, we were happily celebrating a late summer, with temperatures reaching sky-high. Paris is not operating by those same temperatures, oh no. October means winter is officially on its way. The trees are creeping lower and the leaves are showing a beautiful mix of browns and reds, the kids are wrapped up in cute winter scarves and I am freezing my California-butt off and fall has JUST begun! I love this look for the transition into colder fall days - a long, colorful skirt and a warm leather jacket. Totally chic sans goosebumps!

A while back I was reading The Beautiful Fall which chronicles the amazing and complex lives of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld and fell in love with the lustrous descriptions of fashion in the 70's. One of the famous characters of the scene was Angelica Huston, model turned Hollywood lover turned actress. Nowness did a feature on her a few days ago and I couldn't help but admire how elegantly she has aged and how stunningly unconventional she was in her youth.

This coming issue is all about fiction and its large part in fashion. BARE explores the growing phenomenon of androgyny, pays homage to the influential and creative works of the late Alexander McQueen, and experiments with the ubiquitous fairy tales and type-scenes. BARE's photoshoots and interviews strive to collaborate with more local talent (San Franciscian Cari Borja is featured in "A Class of Their Own") and take advantage of what the Bay Area has to offer. In short, BARE's seventh issue investigates the relationship between fantasy and accessibility. We feel that this theme is especially resilient today in the fashion industry and made sure viewers will be swept off their feet.

Celebrating the museum's newest exhibit, American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity, the stars stepped out in a wide palate of neutrals and classic black and white, hinting to the trends taking over 2010. This year my absolute favorite is the Calvin Klein number on Zoe Saldana, she looks fabulous! I'm sure I've mentioned it at some point, but dancing has been my greatest passion since I was a little girl. I went to The Nutcracker each winter and fell in love year after year. At age 10, my mother took me to see Cats--how they moved their bodies into the most bizarre positions with pure bliss and ease, it completely blew me away.

I was enrolled in classes the very next morning.

I have had a religious-like fervor for the art ever since.

Due to an injury and a terrible back, I have been so limited in dancing the last few years that seeing images as beautiful as this make my heart warm up, and sad a little, too. So often we discuss how the arts are deeply fused within the world of fashion, and it would be naive to say otherwise. Dance has always been my ultimate form of expression and when it is fused with the powerful force of fashion, the outcome is utterly breathtaking.

Boob Rant: "All My Teensy Ladies"

I will start off by saying that I approach this show with a total bias.

I have refrained from posting about F/W 2010 collections but I feel like the Louis Vuitton show is worth mentioning. The pieces are wonderful, yes. In fact, they're some of my favorite from all of the collections (I would wear every single one). However, what it is that sticks out to me is the "womanliness" of the models. There is always so much flack given to the industry about using waif-like models, women with silhouettes so tiny that they look like they could snap in half. And I have to agree, that is not what "real" women look like. Some, sure, but definitely not most. Marc Jacobs went a different direction with the Louis Vuitton show--when I heard that there were "fuller" women, I was anxious to see what exactly that meant.

As a tiny breasted woman, I am concerned about this representation of "real" women just as much as that of bone-poking-skin women. What about us ladies that lack in the cleavage department? Bar Refaeli, Adriana Lima...skinny skinny with big boobs. To me, that's just as unattainable as the industry "norm." I can't help but have a sore spot for this idea of womanliness...what about us teensy ladies? Aren't we real women, too?

Well, my oh my have I been absent from the blogosphere. And to be honest, I'm not entirely sure when I'll be able to return to a normally functioning blogger, or a normal functioning person for that matter! In recent months, as my graduation date creeps closer, I have become increasing focused on doing everything and anything to prepare myself for that time. Work, interning, studying...simply stretching myself too thin. Or graying my hair too early (thank god that isn't actually true).
Sooo, as a special treat to myself, I am planning a fabulous trip to Coachella 2010. And looking at pictures like the above get me more than excited for my little inner 1970's hippie chic time warp.

When Will It Ever End? II

Another story to add to the demise of the fashion world is that of the future of the front row.
The front row has always seemed to maintain itself as a sort of dreamland, unattainable to all except for the very spectacular fashion elite. The division between said spectacular somebody's and the rest who wish they were those spectacular somebody's could seem discriminatory, sure. But it allows for a sort of romanticism and yet, order within the fashion community that I am in full support of.
However, it seems that it is now possible to buy yourself into that echelon of fashion society. With companies selling off front row tickets, any "fashion nobody"* can land themselves a seat usually occupied by the fashionably credentialed. Not only is this changing the shape of the fashion show prestige itself, but it is also feeds the notion that fashion is unattainable to those without a silver spoon. As a starving student, I like to think that someday my merits within the industry could get me into that front row. Not the money in my pocket.
What do you think? Is this a pro or con to the future of fashion?

*Though it sounds offensive, I swear it isn't. As of now, I, myself, am a fashion nobody.

Since his inception into the fashion world, Alexander McQueen has provided a non-stop flow of inventiveness and creativity that has been the center of attention collection after collection. Today is the first day of school and it is officially storming outside. Any attempt to put together an ensemble was a miserable failure--it only took two seconds to get soaked to the bone. Enjoying my long break between classes, watching the Food Network and cozying up in front of my heater I am getting oh so excited for New York Fashion Week. Last February I spent a lovely week escaping our bone chilling winter in paradise. Also known as Hawaii. Though I love winter, as I've mentioned before, it was so magical to be able to experience "summer in winter." Driving around Oahu with the top down and a warm breeze hitting my skin, walking around in a bikini at midnight...total paradise.
Garance's post takes me back to the utter bliss I felt during that week. Rio is a place I've always dreamed to go and hopefully soon I'll know what their paradise feels like!

It's a slow moving day and I'm feeling like relaxing. Listening to my Morcheeba Pandora mix, halfway cleaning the house, halfway reading blogs, completely content in my bathrobe doing absolutely nothing. I'm in a mood but I'm not sure how to describe it or what it's called. That seems to be the case with these portraits from Jessie Craig. The vibe of each subject rings through the photo and makes complete sense...even if it's indescribable. While reading one of my new fav blogs, Jazzi McG, I found these photos from Purple Magazine. At first glance I thought, oh how cute. But just a second later I realized that I was looking at children. I am the first to admit that I love fashion magazines mostly for their advertisements, but I have to ask, what are we doing to our children? It is criminal and a real tragedy the way the industry has extended its reach to such a young demographic. Before being able to think entirely freely for themselves and develop their own opinions on what they are being subjected to, we are taking advantage of their innocence and vulnerability--the very essence of childhood.

I have seldom seen Lady Gaga sans performance gear, so when Elle released these photos from an upcoming issue of the magazine, I was pleasantly surprised. LG has taken the world--music, artistic and fashion world--by storm and I do not foresee a slow down anytime soon. Seriously though, who on earth could rock the McQueen collection like she did? Yup, that's what I thought.
On another note, the serious posting slowdown can be blamed on final season. It is that time of the year where I drown my studious stress in egg nog and hide under a rock. Wish me luck!

This is so f***ing wild, I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped down to the floor. You need to check out Luxirare to see the photos (and more!) enlarged. They are even more impressive when they are bigger. Using the YSL Cage Heel as inspiration, Luxirare decided (yes, just decided) to make a coat that fit the fabulosity of the shoes themselves.
