Boob Rant: "All My Teensy Ladies"

I will start off by saying that I approach this show with a total bias.

I have refrained from posting about F/W 2010 collections but I feel like the Louis Vuitton show is worth mentioning. The pieces are wonderful, yes. In fact, they're some of my favorite from all of the collections (I would wear every single one). However, what it is that sticks out to me is the "womanliness" of the models. There is always so much flack given to the industry about using waif-like models, women with silhouettes so tiny that they look like they could snap in half. And I have to agree, that is not what "real" women look like. Some, sure, but definitely not most. Marc Jacobs went a different direction with the Louis Vuitton show--when I heard that there were "fuller" women, I was anxious to see what exactly that meant.

Boobs.
As a tiny breasted woman, I am concerned about this representation of "real" women just as much as that of bone-poking-skin women. What about us ladies that lack in the cleavage department? Bar Refaeli, Adriana Lima...skinny skinny with big boobs. To me, that's just as unattainable as the industry "norm." I can't help but have a sore spot for this idea of womanliness...what about us teensy ladies? Aren't we real women, too?

When Will It Ever End? II

Another story to add to the demise of the fashion world is that of the future of the front row.
The front row has always seemed to maintain itself as a sort of dreamland, unattainable to all except for the very spectacular fashion elite. The division between said spectacular somebody's and the rest who wish they were those spectacular somebody's could seem discriminatory, sure. But it allows for a sort of romanticism and yet, order within the fashion community that I am in full support of.
However, it seems that it is now possible to buy yourself into that echelon of fashion society. With companies selling off front row tickets, any "fashion nobody"* can land themselves a seat usually occupied by the fashionably credentialed. Not only is this changing the shape of the fashion show prestige itself, but it is also feeds the notion that fashion is unattainable to those without a silver spoon. As a starving student, I like to think that someday my merits within the industry could get me into that front row. Not the money in my pocket.

*Though it sounds offensive, I swear it isn't. As of now, I, myself, am a fashion nobody.

This has been a nightmarish week, an honest week from hell. And while I would much love to complain about the details of my life, there are other matters that are more pressing to the fashion world, or the world itself.
As I'm sure we've all been made aware, we have lost one of the most brilliant artistic minds of the time. Since his inception into the fashion world, Alexander McQueen has provided a non-stop flow of inventiveness and creativity that has been the center of attention collection after collection. Will all due respect, Alexander McQueen will be greatly missed.

I am a lucky girl. My boyfriend patiently listens to all of my fashion rants and raves--whether I'm quietly swooning over last months Jalouse editorials or loudly expressing my distaste for MJ's 80's revival collection--he pays attention. However, when it comes time to checking out menswear (more specifically, menswear I'm trying to tell him to wear) he tunes out. Perusing through the latest menswear collections I was keeping my eye out for things that might interest him, yet what I found was that I would wear each piece I found!

However, I could not forget to mention the excitement I felt by Derek Lam...the beautiful gold skirt instantly had me thinking of the fun to be had until the beige cape kept the rest of my thoughts all wrapped up...hehe.

Staying classic with a healthy dose of colorful fun, Michael Kors kept me dreaming of the day I will no longer be a starving college student. Besides my natural love of the shoes, each outfit kept me equally delighted. The menswear as well as the womens offered pieces that would fair well on any classy lady or gent...except for maybe the giant pink coat--not my style, but how could I not include it??

After a long day at school, seeing these pieces from Badgley Mischka was just what I needed. Unlike the near fright I felt after viewing MJ's collection last night, I might say that this collection is one of my fashion week favorites.

Hmmm. Maybe it's because I am too young to remember the aforementioned "good old days" but I will say that as a Marc Jacobs obsessive, I felt queasy when I saw this collection. That's a first.
